![]() ![]() I also think there's a bit of obliviousness in this thread - you can't really say "just don't act in a and you'll be fine." Is that code for "gang banger"? Black? This is just code for poorer black people (probably used to include Latinos as well). I've also been told about "people from Chicago" by other white people a good number of times. When we were looking for a rental initially, we passed on a place right in town that was two houses down from someone flying a Confederate flag. We knew what she meant.Ĭoe College has attracted a decent number of black and hispanic students, who have reported at times feeling picked on by police. This was said with a little eyebrow waggling. Well, we were renting below 19th, and it was obvious that was a much more diverse neighborhood. Maybe not worse that in any mostly white town, but, it's there.īuying a house, we were looking fairly close in in NE - we were told that 19th avenue was a sort of dividing line to stay above. The kind of thing that suggests to me there's a general pattern of small-town discrimination here. ![]() I've been exposed to some fairly significant racism here, for a white person. Here's my perception coming from several big cities throughout my life, not really feeling racism directly, but seeing it out there. Hope some of that helps, feel free to DM anytime, again welcome If you are willing to spend a bit more money and don't mind a small commute, Mt Vernon is a small college town just outside of CR that attracts the liberal minded, very cool place to be. Linn-Mar and Prairie are the preferred schools here. CR district seems to be struggling, sadly, but they aren't bad. Thinking about kids? For sure pay attention to the district you are in. Really the entire city there's no spot that you can't walk around at night by yourself and be in any danger.ĭo pay attention to if your house is in a flood plain, how close you are to busy road (1st ave and interstate get loud) the walk-ability of your neighboorhood, condition of your street - normal shit to worry about ) Anything in Marion and Hiawatha is great if you can afford it. NW is good, parts of SE and SW are rundown but still OK. Here we're more divided by economic status than we are race.Īnything on the Northeast Side (north of Mt Mercy) is perfectly safe and sought-after. The police force doesn't seem to have a preference of who they pull over, and my interactions with them they've been professional. Iowans are genuinely kind and will go out of our way to help, regardless of skin tone. Move to the northern side of town.įirst, WELCOME to Iowa! Second, I'm a middle aged white guy who lived here entire life, so my perspective is just that.ĬR is becoming more diverse but we are a large majority of white-folk (85ish percent if you combine the metro area census data) but we're also Yankee's and helped send Obama to the white house. PS the smells take some time to deal with. ![]() And if you get tired of the winter just fly to somewhere warm…. The winters did suck because I’m a pipe fitter so that did get hard after a while but I don’t work outside anymore. The fucking bugs in the summer and the the fucking bugs in the summer I guess the food sort of isn’t the best either but if you can cook it’s fine. The only things I don’t like about it here. It’s cheap to live, Lots of jobs, very safe, few homeless. Blue collar, hard working people that are neighborly. Now I live in a small town and work in cedar rapids. Coming from the west coast it’s just a huge mixing pot. I never seen so many white people in my life hahaha. When I first moved here in 2008 it must have been 99% white people and 1% black. It’s a great place to live and raise kids. Here's the voting thread.įavorite Night Clubs for Live Music: Tornados, CSPS Full voting thread hereįavorite Pizza: Need Pizza with Zoey's a close second.
